Please do not put cream or moisturizer on your child before swimming. Not only does it tend to make the water greasy, but also makes a slippery child…!
No food for 30 minutes before swimming. Be aware that your child will probably be ravenous after swimming though.
Babies must wear swim nappies.
You can get disposable ones at Coop or Migros. Regular swimming costumes are fine too, as long as they fit snugly round the top of the leg.
You will be in close physical contact with your nearly naked child, a pleasure for you both. Do watch out though for watches & jewelry that might catch on their skin.
It is recommended to wait at least 48 hours after a vaccination injection before swimming.
IN THE POOL:
Support your child, but let the water take the weight, too.
Try to keep your child in the water up to their shoulders. Although both the water and the air temperature are warm, any bits exposed tend to chill quite quickly.
Relax and enjoy!
AFTER SWIMMING:
Shower with your child, initially only if they are used to it or seem comfortable. The pool has only a small amount of chlorine in it, but it is still a good idea to get into the habit of showering after swimming.
Wrap your child in a towel, make them comfortable & if possible give them something to eat or drink before getting dressed yourself. A fully-clothed child waiting for mum to dress might overheat. Adults have better control over their body temperatures, so we are much less likely to suffer!
Now is the time to use baby lotion or moisturizer ... for both of you!
